Speaker: Dr. Isra Saleh-Mohd, Psy. D.
SMHCA Annual Cultural Competency Trainings: First in Series
In an article written by Besheer Mohamed, a senior researcher focusing on religion at Pew Research Center, "before 2040, Muslims are projected to become the second-largest religious group in the U.S., after Christians. By 2050, the American Muslim population is projected to reach 8.1 million people." Counselors today have to be not only multiculturally competent but also open and aware of religious beliefs and differences making it essential for counselors to gain knowledge, understanding, and competence of the various religious beliefs, values, and traditions as well as the cultural worldviews when counseling a diverse group such as the American Muslims.
Participants will cover a brief review of relevant psychological research findings and treatment options and gain an increase awareness of basic religious beliefs so as to develop more effective rapport and trust with this population, understand how core religious beliefs may impact psychological presentation of symptoms, increase repertoire of more effective interventions.
