Description

Counselors must be able to competently explore a variety of potentially difficult topics with clients, including abortion care. With recent changes in law regarding this topic, it is important that counselors be aware of these changes and how they may impact their client’s ability to seek out medical care. This presentation will cover the various types of abortion restrictions and protections, how the ability to access care can impact the overall wellbeing of clients, and the intersections between law, ethics, and values as it relates to abortion care. Additionally, participants will be provided access to a list of resources that may be used for further professional development or as resources that can be provided to clients as appropriate.

Learning Objectives

  1. Summarize relevant research data related to mental, physical, and financial outcomes for those who were able to/were denied access to abortion care.
  2. Define the basic types of state protections and restrictions for abortion care.
  3. Discuss the intersection between law, ethics, and values when working with clients considering an abortion.
  4. Locate free resources on abortion care for future use with clients as appropriate.
