Description
In the United States, more than 47,000 deaths occur each year because of suicide. In 2019 there were over 1.3 million suicide attempts. Each day, approximately 86 Americans will die by suicide. Suicide is now the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., which is greater than the rate of death by homicide or AIDS-related deaths. This course will explore suicide risk and will review different assessment tools to aid in consistent suicide risk assessment.
Learning Objectives
Objective 1 - Learn the basic principles of suicide assessment.
Objective 2 - Understand the factors contributing to suicide risk.
Objective 3 - Identify the necessary components for a suicide assessment.
Objective 4 - Identify ways to estimate suicide risk.
Presenter
Tommy Black, Ph.D., LMHC, LPC, CFMHE
Dr. Tommy Black is a Licensed Professional Counselor who has been in private practice since 1998. Currently he serves as a member of the Georgia Composite Board for Professional Counselors, Social Workers, and Marriage & Family Therapists. He also serves as the Chair of the Rules Committee and on the Advisory Panel for the National Board of Forensic Evaluators.
Dr. Black has extensive experience and training in Cognitive-Behavior Therapy, REBT, and DBT. He works with a myriad of life issues but has particular expertise in Grief/Loss, Depression, Anxiety Disorders, PTSD, Impulse Control Issues, Relationship difficulties, and Adjustment Difficulties.
